Post-season play ahead for men's basketball, ice hockey

Men's basketball posted a 3-0 record this past week to earn the No. 2 seed in this week's Liberty League Tournament. Skidmore will host St. Lawrence at 7 p.m. Wednesday in one of two league semifinals.

The Thoroughbreds beat St. Lawrence, RPI, and Union this past week to finish the regular season with a 17-8 overall and 11-5 league record. At St. Lawrence, senior Brian Lowry (West Hartford, Conn.) scored a team-high 20 points and freshman Connor Merrill (Panton, Vt.) added 14 off the bench. Against RPI, Lowry had 22 points and nine rebounds, while senior Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) added 18 points to go with nine assists and Merrill posted a career-high 18 points. In the regular-season finale against Union, senior Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) had a game-high 21 points and O'Shea tallied 12 points, five steals, and four assists.

Ice hockey clinched a first-round home game after splitting a pair of games with No. 7 Castleton. In Friday's loss, freshman David Limoges (Saint-Hippolyte, Quebec) had two goals and an assist, while senior Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass.) added a goal and an assist. In Saturday's 1-0 win, senior Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 22 saves to record the shutout and sophomore Aaron Beck (Maribel, Wisc.) scored the lone goal to secure home ice for Skidmore. The Thoroughbreds finished the regular season 11-12-2 overall and 10-8 in ECAC East play. They host UMass Boston at 7 p.m. Saturday in the league quarterfinals.

Women's basketball went 1-2 last week to end the regular season with a 15-10 overall and 8-8 conference record. Senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) had 13 points and seven rebounds, while freshman Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) added eight points and six rebounds at St. Lawrence. In Friday's win over RPI, Gargiso had a team-high 12 points, while senior Jessie Kavana (Mahopac, N.Y.) added 11 and classmate Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) finished with 10 points, six rebounds, and two blocks. Against Union, Gaugler recorded 13 points, nine rebounds, and four steals, while Gargiso had 11 points and eight rebounds.

Men's tennis opened its spring season with a dominating 9-0 win over local rival Union. Sophomore Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) was a 6-2, 6-2 winner at number-one singles and teamed with senior Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.) to win 8-2 at number-two doubles. Sophomore Jimmy Sherpa (West Vancouver, British Columbia) was 6-1, 6-0 at number-two singles and 8-0 at number-one doubles with freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Ponte Vedra, Fla.). Skidmore returns to action Sunday, Feb. 26, at Vassar.

Riding remained unbeaten after achieving a perfect score to win its own show this past Saturday. Junior Flavia D'Urso (Chester, N.J.) earned high point champion and senior Kelly Campbell (Cohoes, N.Y.) was reserve champion. The Thoroughbreds are currently 79 points ahead of Morrisville State in Region 3 overall scoring with two shows remaining. They return to action Saturday, March 3, at Hartwick. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
