Winter season extended; spring sports under way
Skidmore's men's basketball and hockey teams extended their seasons over the weekend
with a pair of impressive wins. The men's and women's swimming and diving teams set
several records at the UNYSCSA championships, and the men's lacrosse, softball, and
women's tennis teams opened their spring seasons.
Liberty League tournament MVP, senior Terron Victoria, sank a pair of key three-pointers to lead the men's basketball team to a 69-66 win
at Hobart College and nailing Skidmore's second straight Liberty League title. The
19-8 Thoroughbreds will open NCAA Division III tournament play Friday, March 2, against
MIT at Hartwick College. Game time and ticket information will be announced Tuesday.
Senior goalie Colin Bessey had 33 saves to lead the hockey team to a 3-2 win over UMass Boston in the ECAC East
Quarterfinals. Skidmore (12-12-2) advanced to play Castleton State in the ECAC East
semifinals at 7 p.m. Friday, March 2, at Norwich University. Norwich and New England
College will play in the other semifinal with the winners playing at 7 p.m. Saturday,
March 3, for the championship and automatic NCAA tournament bid.
Senior diver Doug Pilawa set a meet and association record, winning the 3-meter event at the UNYSCSA championships
Feb. 22-25 in Rochester. Pilawa also won the 1-meter and was selected Diver of the
Meet. He looks to become Skidmore's first male athlete to compete in the NCAA Division
III championships. The field will be announced March 5.
Junior Carrie Koch highlighted the women's results, finishing eighth in the 1650 yard freestyle and
setting two records in the process: 1000 and 1650 (18:14.95).
The men's tennis team improved to 2-0 with a 6-3 road win over Liberty League rival
Vassar Feb. 26. Senior Luke Granger won 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 at number three singles and combined with senior Max Bevan for
a 9-8 (8-6) win at number three doubles.
Men's lacrosse lost its opener 8-6 at Babson College Feb. 25 while the softball team
opened with a 7-2, 8-0 sweep of Lyndon State College on Feb. 23 in the Adirondack
Sports Complex Dome.
