Spring sports continue hot start

Men's tennis improved to 4-0 in its spring season after a pair of wins over NYU and St. Lawrence. Sophomore Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) posted a 4-0 record at number-one singles and number-two doubles, while classmate Danny Knight(Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.) also posted 4-0 records. Skidmore returns to action March 12 to take on Trinity (TX) in Claremont, Calif.

Women's tennis opened its spring season with a pair of 9-0 wins over William Smith and Ithaca. Sophomore Melissa Hirsch (Alamo, Calif.) was 2-0 at number-one singles, while the number-one doubles team of junior Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Lee Ford (Newton, Mass.) also went 2-0. The Thoroughbreds play Wayne State March 12 in Orlando, Fla.

Men's lacrosse posted a 14-10 win over Bates on Saturday at Tufts University. Junior Mike Perlow (Briarcliff, N.Y.) scored six goals, while classmate Bryan Connolly (Babylon, N.Y.) tallied one goal and six assists and sophomore Quinn Hawkins (Gladstone, N.J.) added three goals. The non-conference game was played in remembrance of former Bates and Lexington High School player Morgan McDuffee, who lost his life 10 years ago. McDuffee was a college teammate of Skidmore coach Jack Sandler. The Thoroughbreds are 1-1 on the season and resume play Wednesday, March 7, when they play Haverford in Basking Ridge, N.J.

Riding remained perfect with a win at the Hartwick show this past weekend. Skidmore class winners included seniors Kelly Campbell (Cohoes, N.Y.), Michelle Bakker (New Canaan, Conn.), Isabella McKeon (Red Hook, N.Y.), Jennifer Parke (Elkins Park, Pa.), juniors Sandrine Couldwell (Salt Lake City, Utah), Marisa McCullough (Montvale, N.J.) and sophomore Kayla Kleinman (Maynard, Mass.). The Thoroughbreds wrap up their regular season Saturday, March 10, at Morrisville State College.

Women's lacrosse was scheduled to open its 2012 campaign Saturday at Mount Holyoke, but the game was postponed due to snow. The game has been rescheduled for April 3 at Skidmore.

Men's basketball, ice hockey seasons come to end

The men's basketball team's season ended with a 62-55 loss to No. 3 MIT in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Friday night. Senior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) scored seven points to become the 14 th player in program history to record 1,000 career points. Senior Kyle Clark (New York, N.Y.) finished with a team-high 14 points and classmate Gerard O'Shea (West Sand Lake, N.Y.) added 13 points and four assists. The Thoroughbreds achieved a 19-9 record as they won their second straight Liberty League Championship and set a program record for wins and league wins in a season.

Ice hockey saw its 2011-2012 season conclude in Friday night's 4-0 loss to Castleton in the ECAC East semifinals. Senior goalie Colin Bessey (Montclair, N.J.) made 30 saves in goal as he ended his stellar career as the Thoroughbreds' all-time leader in save percentage (.901) and goals against average (3.01).
