Plenty of action as spring season hits home stretch

Golf won its second straight tournament this past week, picking up a three-stroke victory at the NYU/Manhattanville Spring Invitational. Junior Anthony DiLisio (Swampscott, Mass.) was the top finisher for Skidmore, tying for second place with a seven-over par, one stroke behind first. Senior Peter Anderson (Wellesley, Mass.) was the next highest finisher for the Thoroughbreds, tying for 15 th with a 15-over par. Skidmore hosts the Palamountain Invitational this weekend at Saratoga State Park. 

Baseball posted a 4-1 record on the week, highlighted by a 3-1 series win at RIT in Liberty League action. In Wednesday's 9-8 squeaker over Middlebury, sophomore Erik Watkins (Sudbury, Mass.) went 4-of-5 with a grand slam as the Thoroughbreds rallied from a 6-0 deficit. On Saturday, Skidmore's offense came alive, putting up 33 runs in a pair of wins. Freshman Nick Barra (Pittsford, N.Y.) drove in six runs in the doubleheader, while junior Alex Barber (Cambridge, Mass.) finished with six hits and five RBI. On Sunday, Skidmore bounced back from a 6-5 game-one loss to take game two behind the pitching of junior Max Martins (Newton, Mass.) and three RBI from Watkins. The Thoroughbreds are 18-8 overall, 10-6 in league play, and travel to MCLA Thursday, April 19, for a 4 p.m. start.

Softball went 1-3 in league play this week. Skidmore split a doubleheader at RIT before dropping a pair at Rochester. Against RIT, senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) drove in five runs, while classmate Sam Crose (Assonet, Mass.) pitched the game-one win. Against Rochester, junior Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) drove in a pair of runs. The Thoroughbreds are 13-17 overall and 2-6 in the Liberty League. They host Plattsburgh at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, April 18.

Men's lacrosse lost to Hamilton and Clarkson. Against Hamilton, juniors Bryan Connolly (Babylon, N.Y.) and Mike Perlow (Briarcliff, N.Y.) had two goals and an assist each, while sophomore goalie Matt Diaco (Kinnelon, N.J.) made 14 saves. In the 10-9 OT loss to Clarkson, Perlow had three goals and Diaco finished with 15 saves. In the two games, senior Ryan Paradis (Brookside, N.J.) won 33-of-46 faceoffs while picking up 20 ground balls to go along with a goal and an assist. Skidmore is now 5-7 overall, 1-3 in league play, and travels to Middlebury Tuesday, April 17.

Women's lacrosse suffered a pair of league losses to William Smith and Union. Against William Smith, sophomores Robin Fetterolf (Huntington, N.Y.) and Summer Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) had two goals and an assist each. In the 9-8 OT loss to Union, Segalas scored three goals and senior Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.) added two goals, while classmate Ali Evans (Avon, Conn.) filled up the score sheet with a goal, four ground balls, three draw controls and two caused turnovers. The Thoroughbreds are now 7-5 overall and 2-4 in the league. They host Amherst at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Men's tennis suffered a 7-2 loss to No. 1 Amherst. Sophomore Danny Knight (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) and freshman Miles Ransom (Delray Beach, Fla.) picked up the wins for No. 22 Skidmore in singles. The Thoroughbreds are 7-5 and host Hobart at 1 p.m. Sunday.

Women's tennis is 9-3 after a 9-0 loss to No. 1 Williams. Junior Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Melissa Hirsch (Alamo, Calif.) competed at the top singles spots for No. 17 Skidmore. The team hosts No. 7 Middlebury at 1 p.m. Saturday. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
