Array of student music concerts to celebrate end of semester

Student Guitar Ensemble

Skidmore's Department of Music will present a variety of student concerts celebrating a semester of hard work from April 19-23.  All events are in the Arthur Zankel Music Center, Helen Filene Ladd Concert Hall. Details are as follows. 

Thursday, April 19, 8 p.m. - Guitar Ensemble

The Skidmore Guitar Ensemble, an auditioned ensemble devoted to the performance of classical guitar music in combination with other instruments and voice, will perform at 8 p.m. April 19. Joel Brown, coach of the Ensemble, is an accomplished performer as both a guitar soloist and a chamber musician as well as a founding member of Tritonis, a flute, guitar and cello trio.

Friday, April 20, 4 p.m. - Singing in Spring

Individual vocal students coached by Anne Turner will perform selected works.

Friday, April 20, 8 p.m. - Small Jazz Ensembles

Under the coaching of artists-in-residence John Nazarenko, Mark Vinci, and George Muscatello, students in the Skidmore Small Jazz Ensembles will perform at 8 p.m. April 20. These student ensembles perform on and off campus for various events, including shows at Caffe Lena, Falstaff's, and Virgil's Coffee House. Repertoire is largely decided by the students and includes jazz, Latin, funk, and rock-based music.

Saturday, April 21, 8 p.m. - String Ensembles

Coached by Michael Emery, the Skidmore String Ensembles feature talented string students who will present selections from classic string music literature at 8 p.m. April 21.

Sunday, April 22, 3 p.m. -Wind Chamber Ensembles

The Skidmore Wind Chamber ensembles will present an eclectic program that includes works by Mendelssohn, Villa-Lobos, Washburn, Handel, Arnold and others. The concert will feature guest
appearances by Filene Scholars violinist Jane Esterquest and cellist Robin Luongo.Ensemble coaches are Jan Vinci, Susan Martula, Randall Ellis and Shelly McLoughlin. 

Sunday, April 22, 8 p.m. - Taiko Drum Class

Skidmore's Taiko Drum Class, coached by Lei Bryant, will perform at 8 p.m. Bryant is anassistant professor of music whose scholarly interests are in music, culture, and performance in East Asia (primarily China, Japan, and Taiwan).

Monday, April 23, 8 p.m. - Skidmore Big Band

The Skidmore Big Band is directed by Mark Vinci and offers students the opportunity to perform in a large jazz group. This auditioned group, which includes as many as 25 members, will perform their end of semester concert April 23.
