Baseball tops Liberty League after 5-0 week

Baseball took over first place in the Liberty League after posting a 5-0 record this week, including a four-game sweep of previous league-leader St. Lawrence. In a 15-8 win at MCLA, sophomore Erik Watkins (Sudbury, Mass.) went 4-for-4 with three runs scored, while senior Zack Rudman (Pittsford, N.Y.) had three hits, three RBI, and three runs scored. Rudman came right back in Friday's doubleheader, tossing a complete game shutout in the opener and finishing 3-for-5 with three runs scored and two RBI in a wild 15-11 game-two victory. On Saturday, junior Max Martins (Newton, Mass.) tossed a six-hit shutout in a 4-0 game-one victory, while classmates Geoff Green (Underhill, Vt.) and Alex Barber(Cambridge, Mass.) drove in three runs apiece in the 9-3 second game to complete the sweep. Skidmore is 23-8 overall and 14-6 in league play; the team hosts Plattsburgh at 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Golf won its fifth tournament of the season and third straight with a one-stroke victory at the Palamountain Invitational. Junior John McCarthy (East Greenwich, R.I.) led from start to finish, shooting four-under 69-71 ? 140. Classmate Garrett Colgan (Chestnut Hill, Mass.) earned a fourth-place finish, shooting a 73-71-144, and senior Peter Anderson (Wellesley, Mass.) tied for 13 th with a 78-73- 151. Skidmore hosts the Liberty League Championships this Saturday and Sunday at Saratoga Spa State Park.

Women's lacrosse posted a 2-1 record, earning league victories at Bard and Vassar after falling Tuesday to No. 10 Amherst. Against Amherst, senior Leslie Stebbins (Wilton, Conn.) had two goals and an assist, while classmate Rachel Klein (Far Hills, N.J.) made nine saves and picked up five ground balls. In the 16-3 Bard game, nine players scored, led by senior Lauren Madden (Huntington, N.Y.), who had four goals, and freshman Christy Sutherland (Los Gatos, Calif.), who had three. On Saturday, sophomore Summer Segalas (Stamford, Conn.) had three goals and an assist to go along with three goals from junior Lexi Melville (Syosset, N.Y.) to beat Vassar, 11-7. The Thoroughbreds are 9-6 overall and 4-4 in the Liberty League. They wrap up their season at 4 p.m. Saturday against RPI.

Softball dropped a pair of 3-1 games against Plattsburgh during the week. In the opener, sophomore Katie Sorochka (Jackson, N.J.) homered and senior Sam Crose (Assonett, Mass.) struck out seven and walked none in the complete game effort. In game two, junior Julia Schwartz (Bryn Mawr, Pa.) homered and senior Abby Fuhrman (Amherst, Mass.) allowed three runs on six hits, while striking out seven in 5.1 innings. Skidmore is 13-9 overall and hosts Williams at 4 p.m. Tuesday for a doubleheader.

Men's tennis blanked Hobart 9-0 on Sunday. Senior Luke Granger (Allendale, N.J.), freshman Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.), and sophomores Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Danny Knight (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) were double-winners for the 22 nd-ranked Thoroughbreds. They are now 8-5 overall and close out the regular season at home Tuesday against No. 7 Middlebury.

Women's tennis lost to Middlebury and MIT to fall to 9-5. The No. 3 doubles team of sophomore Melissa Hirsch (Alamo, Calif.) and freshman Yumi Karlshoej (West Vancouver, B.C.) won against Middlebury, along with sophomore Lee Ford (Newton, Mass.) at number-three singles. Against MIT, junior Nataly Mendoza (San Francisco, Calif.) and sophomore Robyn Baird (Potomac, Md.) were double-winners in the 5-4 loss. The team travels to St. Lawrence Saturday to wrap up the regular season.

Men's lacrosse dropped a pair of road games to Middlebury and No. 8 RIT. Junior Mike Perlow (Briarcliff, N.Y.) finished the week with six goals and an assist, while sophomore Richie Davis (Edgewater, Md.) tallied three goals and two assists. The Thoroughbreds are 5-9 overall and 1-4 in league play. They host Union at 1 p.m. Saturday. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
