Activities
Sandy Baum, professor emerita of economics and currently an independent policy analyst for the College Board Advocacy and Policy Center, has been elected to a five-year term on the Bryn Mawr College Board of Trustees. Baum is a 1972 graduate of Bryn Mawr.
Ian Berry, Malloy Curator of the Tang Museum, participated in a discussion May 3 about German artist Gerhard Richter, following a screening of the film Gerhard Richter Painting at the Saratoga Film Forum.
Pushi Prasad, Zankel Professor in Management for Liberal Arts Students and professor of management and business, was the featured Spring Social Science Colloquium Speaker at the University of Colorado at Boulder. The tittle of her talk was "Veiled Remarks: The Discourse of the Islamic Headscarf in the Scandinavian Workplace." The colloquium was sponsored by the Sociology, Communication, Religions Studies, and Anthropology departments.

David Domozych, professor of biology, is lead author of a new invited review paper in the Frontiers in Plant Science titled "The cell walls of green algae: A journey through evolution and diversity" (3:82. doi: 10.3389/fpls.2012.00082). Co-authors include Marina Ciancia of Universidad de Buenos Aires and Jonatan U. Fangel, Maria Dalgaard Mikkelsen, Peter Ulvskov and William G. T. Willats of the University of Copenhagen.
Evan Mack, lecturer in music, has released a new recording titled Angel of the Amazon, the story of Sister Dorothy Stang's lifetime work on behalf of Brazilian peasant farmers and the rain forest. The two-CD set was recorded live at premiere performances last May in New York City, and may be purchased online at Albany Records, Amazon.com, and BestBuy.com.
Gordon Thompson, professor of music, has a new entry for May on his bog, hosted by Oxford University Press. " The Beatles Get a Second Chance, 9 May 1962," recognizes the 50th anniversary of the band members learning they would get a chance to record at EMI's studios in Abbey Road and weighs the evidence on whether it was their first session under contract or an audition.

Robert Boyers, professor of English and director of the New York State Summer Writers Institute at Skidmore, had a letter to the editor published in The New York Times April 18. Titled "Deconstructing the Pulitzer Fiction Snub," the letter commented on the decision by the Pulitzer Prize jury to not award a 2011 prize for fiction.
David Porter, Tisch Family Distinguished Professor and professor of classics, had a letter to the editor published in The New York Times May 10. Titled "A Clay Vessel," the letter commented on a review by Adam Goodheart of the Christopher Benfey book Red Brick, Black Mountain, White Clay.
Ron Seyb, Joseph C. Palamountain Jr. Professor of Government, supplied in-studio commentary May 8 during the WNYT (Channel 13) live coverage of President Barack Obama's visit to Albany. On My 9, Seyb again provided expert analysis for the station's report of Obama's declaration of support for same-sex marriage.
