Another busy week for Skidmore athletics

Field hockey remained perfect after a trio of victories over Oneonta, RPI, and Cortland last weekend. In a 3-2 OT win at Oneonta, junior Kelly Blackhurst (Johnsburg, N.Y.) tallied a pair of goals including the game-winner, while sophomore goalie Haley McDougall (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) made nine saves.   Seven players recorded a point in a 5-3 Liberty League victory over RPI, which was highlighted by Blackhurst's goal and two assists. Skidmore capped its week with a 4-2 win over Cortland as senior Ceilidh MacNeill(Framingham, Mass.) scored twice and classmate Molly Gile (Dover, N.H.) had a pair of assists.The sixth-ranked Thoroughbreds are now 6-0 overall and 1-0 in league play; they return to action at 4 p.m. Friday to host Vassar.

Men's tennis opened its fall season with a strong showing at the Middlebury Invitational. Sophomore Alec Hoblitzell (Baltimore, Md.) and freshman Kit Green-Sanderson (Toronto, Ontario) won their respective flights in singles action. Hoblitzell won the B singles flight with a 7-6 (2), 6-2 win over Musyoka Mbithi of Trinity in the finals, while Green-Sanderson captured the D singles title with a 6-3, 6-0 win over Trinity's Cam Smith. Skidmore travels to Trinity (Conn.) this Saturday, Sept. 22.

Men's soccer suffered its first loss of the season after a 1-1 week. The Thoroughbreds opened the week with a 4-0 Liberty league victory over Bard as sophomore Brock Bakewell (Tucson, Ariz.) recorded a hat trick, the first since 2006. In a 2-1 loss to Plattsburgh, freshman Aldin Medunjanin (New York, N.Y.) scored the lone goal for Skidmore and classmate Eli Kisslebach (Stamford, Conn.) made seven saves in goal. The Thoroughbreds are now 4-1-1.

Golf finished second at the Middlebury Duke Nelson Invitational this past weekend.Skidmore ended seven strokes behind RPI as senior John McCarthy (East Greenwich, R.I.) finished fourth with a 73-77?150.Freshman Makenzie Denver (Manchester, N.H.) finished sixth and sophomore Zach Grossman (East Hampton, N.Y.) tied for seventh.The Thoroughbreds host the Liberty League qualifier this weekend at Kingswood Golf Course in Hudson Falls. 

Volleyball went 2-2 at the Union Invitational this past weekend, falling to Cortland and Oneonta on Friday before coming back on Saturday with wins over Brockport and Sage.Senior Mallory Mendelsohn (San Francisco, Calif.) averaged 39.75 assists and 9.25 digs per match, while classmate Sam Friedman (Los Angeles, Calif.) averaged 22.5 digs per match and junior Corinne Palmer (Montvale, N.J.) totaled 56 kills and nine blocks. They are now 4-4 overall.

Women's soccer posted a 1-1 record this weekend, defeating Sage 6-0 before falling 1-0 on the road to Oneonta.Against Sage, senior Kelsey Yam (Longmeadow, Mass.) and sophomore Caty Sheridan (Westford, Mass.) each tallied two goals and an assist. At Oneonta, junior keeper Gab Lawrence (Yorktown, N.Y.) finished with two saves.Skidmore is now 1-4 . ~
