Skidmore’s Celebration Weekend, the annual fall event for students to connect with families, is scheduled Oct. 17-19 on campus.
To date, a total of 542 families (more than 1,100 people) are registered for the weekend, one of the College’s most popular events. Celebration Weekend enables families to reconnect with their students, get a taste of College life, hear from Skidmore leaders, and enjoy the beauty of fall in Saratoga Springs and the surrounding area.
Megan B. Mercier, director of alumni and volunteer engagement, said that the number of families is greater this year than last, but the total number of expected guests is about the same. “Skidmore is ready to offer a warm welcome to the friends and families of our students this coming weekend. The weekend is always a great opportunity to showcase the College and all it has to offer,” she added.
Highlights this year include performances in the Arthur Zankel Music Center, Dancing at Lughnasa at the Janet Kinghorn Bernhard black box theater, and the annual “Under the Big Top" lineup of student performers on Saturday night. New this year: a campus sustainability tour, which will include highlights of sustainability efforts and the new location of the Skidmore Community Garden; and a “Faculty and Friends Reception” on Friday. For the second year there will be a Farm to Table dining experience in Murray-Aikins Dining Hall on Saturday night.
Visitors are always interested in what their students are learning and toward that end the ever-popular Mini-College showcasing a range of faculty interests is a perennial draw. Also on this year’s schedule, an All-Day Spotlight on Collaborative Research: A Cornerstone of the Skidmore Education. Throughout the weekend, displays on Skidmore's faculty-student collaborative research will be set up in Tisch Learning Center, Dana Science Center, and the Williamson Sports Center. There also will be a number of department and program open houses.
Another popular event is the President’s Hour on Saturday morning in Gannett Auditorium, featuring President Phillip A. Glotzbach.
A “Haunted History Tour” of Saratoga Springs, and a city bus tour are among the events that will lure families off campus on Saturday.
