Field hockey extends win streak

It was another winning week for Skidmore field hockey, as the team extended its winning streak to four games. Men’s soccer was also undefeated on the week, going 1-0-1 against a pair of conference foes, while volleyball rattled off two more conference wins, splitting its four league matches. Women’s soccer was handed its first two conference losses of the season in two tightly contested games and men’s tennis finished its fall schedule, taking on Trinity College.

Field hockey notched a pair of non-conference wins, beating Williams and Oneonta. Sam Skott ’15 extended her scoring streak to four games with a goal in Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Williams and Jenn Hanks ’16 netted her third goal in as many games. The 11th-ranked Thoroughbreds scored four second-half goals en route to a 4-1 win Saturday against Oneonta. Melanie Webb ’15, Krista Lamoreaux ’17 and Dani DeGregory ’16 scored in the span of 2:49, giving Skidmore a 3-1 lead and Kayla Rose ’18 tallied an insurance goal in the 66th minute. The team closes out its conference schedule this weekend, hosting Union at 4 p.m. Friday, Oct. 24, and Vassar at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

Men’s soccer battled to a scoreless draw at Hobart before grinding out a 2-0 win at RIT. Goalkeeper Eli Kisselbach ’16 turned away four shots against the Statesmen, earning his first shutout of the season, and tied a season-high mark with eight saves in Saturday’s victory at RIT. Brock Bakewell ’15 put Skidmore in front just 1:31 into the contest with his seventh goal of the season and Augustine Okoye ’18 sealed the win, potting his fifth goal. The team welcomes No. 13 St. Lawrence at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 25.

Volleyball went 2-2 in league play, posting 3-0 wins against Vassar and Bard, while dropping matches against Union and RIT. Setter Kalle Fox ’18 led the way against Vassar, producing 25 assists and a team-high 17 digs. Aria Goodman ’15 added 16 digs, nine kills and two blocks and Brittany Osborn  ’17 contributed 10 digs. Osborn tallied a team-high 13 kills and three aces against Bard; Clare Kenny ’15 registered 12 digs, two aces, and two assists; and Clara Jones ’18 chipped in eight kills and three aces. The

team plays two conference matches Friday at Union before hosting a pair of league opponents on Saturday. The Thoroughbreds (7-19, 3-5 Liberty League) take on Union at 4 p.m. and St. Lawrence at 6 p.m. Friday and face RIT at 12 p.m. and Clarkson at 4 p.m. Saturday.

Women’s soccer suffered its first conference losses of the season, falling against No. 8 William Smith and RIT. Goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh ’17 stopped five shots in both games. The Thoroughbreds outshot the Tigers 13-10, but they could not find a way past the RIT goalkeeper. Nicole LoRusso ’17 had a game-high four shots and two shots on goal. The team travels to St. Lawrence for a 3 p.m. contest Saturday, Oct. 25.

Men’s tennis closed out its fall schedule with a tough match at Trinity College. Kai Yuen Leung ’17 and Jonah Epstein ’16 were 8-6 winners at number-two doubles and Kit Sanderson ’16 recorded a 6-3, 6-4 win at number-one singles, as the team knocked off 7-2. ~ By Dan St. Jacques
