Brown highlights Jan. 24 Lake Avenue concert

January 17, 2015

Joel Brown, senior artist-in-residence, will highlight a special concert at the Lake Avenue Elementary School on Saturday, Jan. 24.

Bob Warren and Joy MacKenzie
Bob Warren and Joy MacKenzie are also slated to perform.

The event, a folk and rock concert/fundraiser, will feature performances by Brown, Dave Maswick and Jason Brown; along with Bob Warren and Joy MacKenzie with Tony Markellis (from Phish’s Trey Anastasio Band). The event gets under way in the Lake Avenue auditorium at 7:30 p.m. Saturday. Tickets are $10 in advance, $15 at the door.

This is the first time in school history that the historic auditorium at Lake Avenue is being used for a concert geared toward an adult audience. All performers are donating 100 percent of the proceeds, which will be used to help purchase new risers for the school’s auditorium.

Brown has earned acclaim as a performer of classical and contemporary guitar, including original compositions. He most recently performed before an enthusiastic audience in October at Skidmore's Arthur Zankel Music Center as a member of the Finger Lakes Guitar Quartet. He is also known for his work as a founding member of Tritonis, a flute, guitar and cello trio, and performs regularly as a member of Chris Brubeck’s Triple Play, a crossover group blending jazz with blues and folk music. Reflecting on the upcoming concert, he said, "Lake Avenue Elementary was such a wonderful experience for our three kids. I'm really glad I can give back, even just a little."

Warren is a singer-songwriter from Greenwich, N.Y. He has been recording and performing his original compositions since 1969. Said Warren. "Joy and I are so thankful for all of the opportunities we have to sing. We long ago decided that, when we could, we would lend our support to worthwhile causes. Well, here is a worthwhile cause...and we get to sing at Lake Avenue! A win-win all around," said Warren.

The concert is open to the public. Tickets may be purchased here. For more information, please contact Ashley Campbell, Lake Avenue School PTA vice president, at 347-803-0442.
