The Skidmore community is invited to a reception to welcome Mellon Fellow Nicky Tavares this Thursday, Feb. 12, from 5 to 6:30 p.m. in LI 113. Tavares will share a short presentation of her work in documentary film, photography, and design. Refreshments will be provided.

A graduate of the Massachusetts College of Art and Design, where she earned an M.F.A. degree in film and video, Tavares earned a B.A. degree in photocommunications at St. Edward’s University and holds a post-baccalaureate certificate in fine art from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts.

At Skidmore she will support the work of the John B. Moore Documentary Studies Collaborative (MDOCS) and Visualization Forum within Project VIS. Her responsibilities include teaching, serving as a resource to faculty interested in using visual communication as a pedagogical method and tool, and supporting the summer Storyteller’s Institute.

Deb Hall, director of the Visual Literacy Forum, said, "Nicky will bring much-needed video production skills to campus – her energy and creative background will enliven Library 113 and help to increase visual literacy in our community. Watch for her storyboarding workshop this semester that will help participants plan their digital storytelling projects. "

Tavares has exhibited her work at group and solo screenings in Boston, Austin, Provincetown, the Netherlands, and New York City. She is currently completing a 75-minute feature documentary titled Son of a Bug, about the Bugs, the first Pakistani rock band.

Jordana Dym, interim director of MDOCS, said, "It is a delight to welcome Nicky, a talented documentarian with wonderful talents and ideas about our Storytellers' Institute, who is ready to hit the ground running with workshops and courses in photography, video and multimedia. In her first week, she's already reached out across campus to faculty, staff and students and we look forward to the energy she will bring to this part of the Project VIS initiative."
