Black to present Ramsey Lecture at Honors Forum event

February 17, 2015

English Professor Barbara Black will try to answer “The Question of the Future” when she delivers the annual Jon Ramsey Honors Forum Lecture at 5:15 p.m. Friday, Feb. 20, in Davis Auditorium.

The talk will precede the induction of the newest members of the Periclean Honors Forum. The program is open to all members of the College community.

Black, who also serves as associate chair of the Department of English, said, “The question of our future is a difficult one. Who are we? What do we wish to be, to become? Though humans have always wondered about beginnings and endings, about destiny and after, the question of the future is particularly charged right now.

Black’s teaching and research interests include Victorian literature and culture, Victorian non-fiction prose, 19th-century poetry, and cultural studies. She is the author of two books:  A Room of His Own (Ohio University Press, 2012) and On Exhibit:  Victorians and Their Museums (UP of Virginia, 2000) and a number of articles, including “Walking on the Wild(e) Side,” Salmagundi, Winter 2008.

She is a graduate of Bryn Mawr College and the University of Virginia.

According to the Honors Forum Members Guide, “The idea of an Honors Forum came from former Dean of Studies Jon Ramsey, who worked with a faculty/student/administration task force. Together they created a proposal for an organization designed to support Skidmore’s top students in their academic and co-curricular endeavors. The annual Jon A. Ramsey lecture honors Dean Ramsey’s vision.” Ramsey lecturers are nominated by students and chosen by the Honors Council and the Dean of the Faculty/Vice President for Academic Affairs.
