Fall athletes continue as strong competitors

Women’s tennis highlighted Skidmore sports last week, extending its Liberty League schedule with two convincing 9-0 wins against regional rivals RPI and Union. Men’s soccer notched an impressive win against Williams and hung tough against No. 21 Plattsburgh, and golf put together a strong performance at the Duke Nelson Invitational. Men’s tennis took on top competition from the northeast region at the Middlebury Invite, volleyball picked up its first Liberty League win of the season and field hockey and women’s soccer each suffered a pair of defeats.

WOMEN’S TENNIS (2-0)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Skidmore won all six singles matches against RPI, dropping just one of 13 sets.
  • Madie Benn ’17 posted wins at number-two singles and number-one doubles in both matches.
  • Danielle Giannetti ’18 won at number-one singles and number-three doubles against the Engineers and the Dutchwomen.
  • Brianna Greene ’18 also recorded two victories against RPI, pairing with Giannetti in doubles and adding a 6-1, 6-0 win at number-three singles.
  • The Thoroughbreds extended their Liberty League win streak to 36 matches with a 9-0 win against Union.
  • Zoe Chodak ’19 cruised to a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at number-six singles against the Dutchwomen, also combining with Caroline Finnegan ’18 for an 8-5 win at number two doubles.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Skidmore handed previously undefeated Williams its first loss of the season last Tuesday.
  • Nick Masiero ’17 netted his first goal of the season in the win and Kevin Santos ’18 scored his second goal is as many games.
  • Eli Kisselbach ’16 made three of his five saves against the Ephs in the second half, earning his second shutout of the season.
  • Todd Jensen ’16 scored from a free kick against Plattsburgh for his first goal of the season.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Thoroughbreds shaved 13 strokes off the first round score a second-round 306.
  • Teddy Badenhausen ’17 was the team’s top finisher, tying for 13th with 81-74—155.
  • Mackenzie Nelson ’17 tied for 17th with 81-75—156.
  • Tim Manwaring ’16 and Mitchell Campbell ’17 tied for 22nd.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The team competed against the best players in the northeast region and some of the top Division III players in the country at the Middlebury Invitational.
  • Lucas Pickering ’18 and Steven Koulouris ’18 won the “B” doubles flight.
  • Ted Berkowitz ’18 battled his way to the “D” flight final and Max Swerdlick ’17 advanced to the “C” flight semifinals.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Caite Canfield ’19 had 13 kills and nine digs in the win against Bard and added a double-double against St. Lawrence with 10 kills and 12 digs to go along with two aces.
  • Sam Abrams ’19 contributed 16 assists and three aces against the Raptors.
  • Clara Jones ’18 had a season-high five blocks, including three solo blocks against St. Lawrence.
  • Brittany Osborn ’17 and Allie Dillon ’19 contributed 12 kills each against the Saints.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kayla Rose ’18 potted her second goal of the season against New Paltz and Dani Degregory ’16 extended her point streak to 14 games with an assist.
  • Caroline Saros ’18 also scored her first goal of the year against the Hawks.
  • Goalkeeper Zoe McGuire ’18 made a career-high 17 saves against New Paltz and recorded double-digits saves for the third consecutive game—against No. 11 Montclair—stopping 11 shots.
  • Jenn Hanks ’16 produced a multi-point game against Montclair with a goal and an assist.
