Skidmore dominant in week's sports action

It was a dominant week for Skidmore fall sports with field hockey, men’s soccer, women’s soccer and volleyball combining for an 8-1 record. Not to be outdone, men’s tennis won two titles at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals, while the women’s tennis doubles team of Madie Benn ’17 and Michelle Fuca ’18 competes for the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional doubles title today (Sept. 28) at William Smith College. Golf also had a strong week with a solid outing in rounds one and two of the Liberty League Golf Championships.

MEN’S TENNIS

LAST WEEK

USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals – Poughkeepsie, N.Y.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kai Yuen Leung ’17 knocked off top-seed Matt Heinrich of Stevens, 7-5, 6-2 to win the USTA/ITA Northeast Regional championship.
  • Leung then teamed with Nick Tong ’16 to win the doubles title, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, over Sherman Uyeno and McKinley Grimes of RPI.
  • Leung and Tong qualify for the USTA/ITA National Small College championships to be played Oct. 15-18 at the Palmetto Tennis Center in Sumter, S.C.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dani DeGregory ’16 soared past the 200-career point mark with a program-record 11 points (5G, 1A) in the team’s 10-1 win against Stockton.
  • Grace Florsheim ’19 produced her first collegiate points against the Ospreys with a goal and an assist, while Elizabeth Coughlin ’19 earned her first career win in goal.
  • DeGregory, who ranks second on Skidmore’s all-time scoring list with 212 career points, added eight points against Utica, netting a second-half hat trick to go along with two assists.
  • Gabby Hyman ’19 potted her first collegiate hat trick in the win.
  • Coughlin recorded her first career shutout, stopping all five shots she faced.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Four different players scored in Skidmore’s 5-0 shutout against MCLA, with Austin Okoye ’18 tallying twice.
  • The team was victorious in its first Liberty League contest of the season, beating Clarkson, 2-0.
  • The Thoroughbreds scored for the sixth time in seven games in the win against the Golden Knights.
  • Okoye netted his third goal of the week against Clarkson, while Kevin Santos ’18 produced his fourth goal of the year.
  • Eli Kisselbach ’16 made a season-high seven saves against the Golden Knights, earning his third shutout of the season.

  • Christina Sanzari ’18 scored her first goal of the season to lift Skidmore to a 1-0 victory against Union in its first Liberty League game of the season.
  • Emily Saliterman ’17 scored her fourth goal and third game-winning goal of the season in the team’s 1-0 win against Clarkson.
  • Goalkeeper Deirdre Walsh ’17 recorded back-to-back shutouts for the second time this season, making four saves against the Dutchwomen and three against the Golden Knights.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Danielle Giannetti ’18 and Brianna Greene ’18 each won their first three matches at the USTA/ITA Northeast Regionals before falling in the quarterfinals.
  • Madie Benn ’17 and Michelle Fuca ’18 advanced to Monday’s doubles final, defeating teammates Giannetti and Greene in the semifinal.
  • Benn and Fuca face Cat Cummey and Marylen Santos of Geneva in the championship, with the winner advancing to the USTA/ITA Small College National Championships in October.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The team recorded back-to-back sweeps for the first time this season with 3-0 wins Colby-Sawyer and Hamilton.
  • Caite Canfield ’19 recorded her sixth double-double of the season against Colby-Sawyer with 11 kills and 12 digs and added 14 kills, eight digs and four aces against Hamilton.
  • Allie Dillon ’19 notched 11 kills and 18 digs against the Continentals.
  • Marcela Familiar-Bolaños ‘17 led the defense, posting 23 digs against Hamilton and 19 against Colby-Sawyer, while Rachel Licata ’18 added three blocks against the Chargers.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Skidmore (301-302—603) sits second after rounds one and two of the Liberty League Golf Championships, five strokes back of leader Rochester.
  • Damian Hammond ’19 (76-73—149) and Mackenzie Nelson (74-75—149) are tied for fourth after the first two rounds.
  • Three other Thoroughbreds are in the top-20: Mitchell Campbell ’17 (76-77—153) is tied for 13th, Tim Manwaring ’16 (77-77—154) is 15th and Denis Biglin ’18 (75-81—156) is 18th.
  • The final two rounds of the Liberty League Golf Championship take place in the spring in Baldwinsville, N.Y.
