Winter athletics season underway

Skidmore’s winter sports season is now in full swing with women’s and men’s basketball opening the 2015-2016 campaign over the weekend. Swimming and diving held its own against Division II Saint Rose and ice hockey was also in action, taking on a pair of nationally ranked opponents.

Skidmore 45, New Paltz 62

Skidmore 53, Wellesley 50

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kelly Donnelly ’18 posted 17 points and 13 rebounds against New Paltz and 18 points and nine rebounds against Wellesley on 5-for-8 shooting.
  • Amber Holgate ’16 had nine points, six rebounds and three steals against New Paltz and tallied 12 points to go along with six rebounds off the bench against Wellesley.
  • Veronica Moceri ’18 produced a career-high 13 points against Wellesley.
  • The team forced New Paltz into 40 turnovers.

Skidmore 84, 90

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The team nearly erased a 19-point second-half deficit, climbing back within three with 2:05 remaining, but Ithaca made the most of its free throw opportunities down the stretch to hang on for the 90-84 win.
  • Aldin Medunjanin ’16 had 21 points, including 15 in the second half, to go along with five assists.
  • Royce Paris ’17 tallied 15 points on 5-of-6 shooting and Edvinas Rupkus ’19 contributed 14 points and eight rebounds.
  • Erik Sanders ’16 reached the 1,000-career point mark with 13 points. He also added a game-high 11 rebounds.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Yookee Roh ’16 placed second in the 50-yard freestyle and anchored the 400-yard medley relay team to a first-place finish.
  • Erin Donovan ’17 and Claire Stetten ’19 finished 1-2 in the 100-yard backstroke and Stetten added another second-place finish in the 200-yard individual medley.
  • Jay Hansen ’19 led the men’s team, winning the 500-yard freestyle and finishing second in the 1000-yard freestyle with a lifetime-best time.
  • Gabriel Salitan-Alvarez ’17 contributed a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 and the 200-yard freestyle.
  • Kevin Brito ’16 took first in the 1-meter and 3-meter diving events.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Goaltender Oscar Flory ’19 made 35 saves against Babson, including 14 in the third period.
  • The team rallied from two goals down against UMass Boston with two third-period goals, but the Beacons managed to produce the game-winning goal with 2:30 remaining in regulation.
  • Adam Moodie ’19 tallied his second goal of the season and Connor Pelkey ’18 scored his second power play goal.
  • Jack McDonald ’17 had a season-high 40 saves, including 16 in the third period.
