Winter athletes have a week of victories

In a dominant week for Skidmore winter sports, the teams combined for an overall record of 8-1. Ice hockey notched its first two wins, including a victory over defending conference champion, No. 3 Norwich. Men’s basketball persevered against the winningest NCAA men’s basketball program of the 2000s, while women’s basketball had a 2-1 week. Riding won its third show of the semester and men’s and women’s swimming and diving each had strong outings and will  continue to build on that momentum in the Liberty League championships.

Skidmore 5, Saint Michael’s 4 (OT)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Anthony Bird ’17 scored a natural hat trick and Jack McDonald ’17 had a 40-save shutout to lead the team to a 4-0 shutout against No. 3 Norwich.
  • Skidmore snapped Norwich’s 20-game home win streak and was responsible for the first time the Cadets had been shut out at home in 58 games.
  • Mickey Foley ’18 scored 51 seconds into overtime to give the Thoroughbreds their second win of the weekend in a 5-4 victory over Saint Michael’s.
  • Marc Cibelli ’17 had a goal and an assist, Andreas Michaildis ’18 had a pair of assists and Sam Bloom ’17, Christian Leahy ’18 and Connor Pelkey ’18 and each scored against the Purple Knights.
  • Oscar Flory ’19 made 27 saves against Saint Michael’s for his first career win.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The team used a 19-3 run in the closing minutes of play and held Castleton to six points over the final 7:29 to secure an 86-67 win.
  • Erik Sanders ’16 led six Thoroughbreds in double figures with 18 points to go along with 10 rebounds and four assists.
  • Martin Bedulskij ’18 had 17 points and 10 rebounds, Royce Paris ’17 scored 14 points and Aldin Medunjanin ’16 and Isaac Carp ’16 had 10 points each against the Spartans.
  • Medunjanin led all scorers with 18 points to go along with five assists against the Fighting Scots.
  • Sanders had 17 points and seven rebounds and Nick Volpe ’16 had a team-high 10 rebounds.
  • Wooster is the winningest program in all of college basketball in the 2000s (.842; 411-77)

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Kelly Donnelly ’18 recorded a double-double in all three games. She had 19 points and a game-high 10 rebounds against Hartwick, 14 points and 12 rebounds against Pine Manor and 17 points and a season-high 17 boards against Emmanuel.
  • Kayla Mitchell ’19 tallied 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting against the Hawks and produced a career-high 11 points against Pine Manor.
  • Veronic Moceri ’18 and Taylor Ong ’19 each had career days against Pine Manor. Moceri scored a career-high 13 points on 4-of-6 shooting and Ong registered a career-best 11 points.
  • Amber Holgate ’16 contributed 11 points and three bounds off the bench against Emmanuel.

  • Ursula Green ’16 was the High Point Rider of the competition, winning her over fences and flat classes.
  • Jessica Stoukides ’16 was first in Open Flat and placed second in Open Over Fences. She won a ride-off against teammate Talia Reutter ’16 and Morgan O’Sullivan of SUNY Cobleskill to claim Reserve High Point Rider honors.
  • Reutter won Novice Over Fences and was third in Intermediate Flat and Maeve Foley ’19 won Novice Over Fences and placed third in Intermediate Flat.
  • The team won all three shows of the semester and currently leads the region by 65 points.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Yookee Roh ’16 was a triple winner against Utica, placing first in the 100 and 200-yard freestyle and the 400-yard individual medley.
  • Erin Donovan ’17 provided two wins with first place finishes in the 100 and 200-yard backstroke.
  • Olivia Morfit ’19 won the 500 and 1000-yard freestyle and Kaleigh Kessler ’16 was first in the 200-yard butterfly and placed second in the 100-yard butterfly.
  • On the men’s side, Teague Costello ’19 won the 500-yard freestyle and the 100-yard backstroke.
  • Ben Rudman ’17 added a pair of wins in the 100 and 200-yard breaststroke,
  • The men’s 200-yard medley relay team (Costello, Harrison Shockley ’19, Michael Mattone ’19, Charlie Bullis ’16) and 200-yard freestyle relay team (Costello, Shockley, Bullis, Mario Hyman ’16) each touched in first.
