A big crowd creates big wins for Big Green Scream

February 20, 2019

The Skidmore College basketball teams wrapped up their regular seasons in a big way in front of 1,200 raucous spectators at the annual Big Green Scream.

The Williamson Sports Center glowed Skidmore green as fans filed in from a snow-covered campus to warm the stands with T-bred spirit and the teams claimed victories against the St. Lawrence “Saints.”

The women’s team kicked off the double-header with passionate play. Senior Haley English’s push to score six points in the final 33 seconds cinched the team’s 52-48 victory.

Rallying after a late deficit, the men’s team stunned the Saints with a 65-54 overtime win, closing out the regular season with five straight wins, a Liberty League regular season title and a school record of 15 league wins in one season. Their show-stopping season earned the Thoroughbreds a top seed in the Liberty tournament and a bye to the semifinals later in the month.

"The regular season championship is a true test for a team," said men’s coach Joe Burke. "I am very proud of these guys and grateful for those who support them. There was tremendous turnout from the student body and community, the gym was louder than I’ve ever heard it, and the passion was at an all-time high."

The annual tradition featured a few moments of crowd-favorite fun, including in-game contests and prizes, musical performances by student groups, a pop-up SkidShop for donning Skidmore swag and a winter carnival with food, games and other fun activities.

Sustainable Skidmore was back for another round of Recyclemania, a challenge to make the Big Green Scream a zero-waste event through recycling and composting.

The games also marked Senior Day for both teams. The women honored Kayla Mitchell, Taylor Ong, and Haley English, and the men celebrated Dakpe Yiljep, Edvinas Rupkus, Jack Byrne, Chase Ta, Charlie Williams and their team manager, Lexi Parker.
