The Schick Art Gallery and the Skidmore Summer Art Program present Heat Wave, a group exhibition of works in a variety of materials by the Summer Art Faculty
and Visiting Artists, on display from July 11 - 25. This year, the exhibition will
feature ceramics, graphic design, prints, paintings, and drawings by nine artists:
Patrick Casey, Katie DeGroot, Kathy Hemingway-Jones, Sophie Isaak, Joe Klockowski,
Hannah Morris, Sana Musasama, Lauren Sandler, and Deborah Zlotsky.
Sana Musasama and Deborah Zlotsky are two featured visiting artists in Summer 2018;
both will be lecturing and visiting art classes. Musasama is a ceramic artist from
St. Albans, NY who studied Mende pottery in West Africa in the late 1970s; since then
she has continued to travel and learn clay traditions from cultures around the world.
Among the concerns of her work are the safety of women, specifically rituals involving
female chastity and rites of passage.
Zlotsky lives in Albany, NY and teaches at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her
abstract paintings are rich with vibrant color relationships; of them she states,
“Each painting materializes out of a friction between intention and coincidence, much
like the daily processing required to be in the world.” Zlotsky will present a public
lecture on her work on July 12th at 4:30 p.m. in the Somers Room of the Tang Teaching
Museum.
The Schick Art Gallery offers students, the college community, and the public an opportunity
to view contemporary exhibitions that complement the Studio Art curriculum. The gallery
is located inside the Saisselin Art Building on the Skidmore College campus.
