Asian Studies will be cosponsoring an exciting series of events on campus next week supporting documentary filmmaker Justin Schell’s 2015 film We Rock Long Distance and featuring Hmong rapper Tou SaiKo Lee. As part of this 3-day residency, Justin Schell will be joined by international hip hop artists Maria Isa, Tou SaiKo Lee, and Reskape for a workshop on documenting music performance, a series of class visits, a film screening, and a diasporic hip hop concert in Falstaff’s. We Rock Long Distance weaves together the sounds and stories of three Twin Cities
hip hop artists – M.anifest, Maria Isa, and Tou SaiKo Lee – as they journey home to
Ghana, Puerto Rico, and Thailand to create unique and unexpected connections across
generation and geography.
Following the film screening, please join us for a panel discussion with Justin Schell
and featured artists Maria Isa and Tou SaiKo Lee.
Diasporic Hip Hop Concert featuring Maria Isa, Tou SaiKo Lee, and Reskape, with noah prebish dj set, Thursday, September 24, 8 p.m., Falstaff’s
Maria Isa and Tou SaiKo Lee will be joined in concert by Senegalese rapper Reskape
for an evening of international hip hop.

of gamelan music from the Indonesian islands of Bali and Java.
