Dear Skidmore Community,

As the U.S. election draws near, we enter a time of heightened political activity and messaging. The intensity of differing views has been particularly strong in the recent period and is expected only to increase in the coming weeks.

With this in mind, I write to remind you that Skidmore has an established Policy on Political Activity, which I encourage you to review on our website. This policy was developed by the Institutional Policy and Planning Committee (IPPC) in collaboration and consultation with students, staff and faculty members. Its underlying message is a reminder for all of us to be respectful of opinions that differ from our own and to be measured in our response to them.

In line with our liberal arts mission, Skidmore cherishes freedom of speech, thought and expression. Diverse opinions, perspectives and ideas provide opportunities for us to reflect, learn and grow individually and as an institution. The College fully supports the constitutional rights of assembly and freedom of expression as bulwarks of our democratic process that protect us all.

In this election season, I encourage you to participate in the political process, especially by voting. I also invite each member of our community to find positive ways to express our opinions as we also seek greater understanding of the range of views held by others. Our opportunities for civic engagement are a powerful part of our responsibility as citizens both of Skidmore and of our broader communities.
