At Skidmore, peer networks are strong and full of great career tips and experiences.  Read on to learn more about Peer Power, an event where seniors with early job offers share advice.  Other peer-led initiatives include the Health & Biomedical Community's Peer Advisor Network, and our CDC paraprofessional team of student career advisors called the Career Corps.

Peer Power

Several members of the Class of 2020 know where they're headed post-commencement.  These career rockstars are often asked by their friends about their top networking strategies, how they leveraged internships into jobs, and how they stood out for competitive opportunities.

Now they're bring their knowledge to all Skidmore students-- just in time before recruitment events like Career & Internship Connections and Skidmore Recruitment Day.

The Peer Advisor Network

Designated for students interested in health and science fields, the Peer Advisor Network is comprised of students who have already completed competitive internships, and then serve as mentors to fellow Skidmore students seeking a similar path.  The network includes a robust group of advisors whose internship experiences range from working at the Brooklyn Urban Ecology and the Environment Program to summer research opportunities at Columbia University, Baylor College of Medicine, Brigham & Women's Hospital, and more.

Neuroscience major, Dean Rette '20, is one of more than 30 peer advisors.  Dean interned at Merck & Co. in their Washington D.C. policy office, and the experience taught him about standing out as a candidate.

Excluding yourself from the main pool of applicants is a necessity. I share with others that I was able to obtain my internship because of my passion for neuroscience and healthcare. Every previous intern in Merck's policy office had been a political science or business student. Show how unique you are and what you can offer to an organization!

career Corps

Serving as the CDC's paraprofessional team, the Career Corps are a highly trained group of students who review resumes, cover letters, and personal statements conveniently via email within 48 hours. Career Corps is also available to conduct on-campus workshops on topics such as resumes, cover letters, networking, internship/job search tutorials, and more.  Schedule an on-campus workshop here.
