Chart your chemistry path

Whether you're pursuing chemistry, biochemistry, pre-health, or planning to double major, Skidmore offers flexible pathways to shape the major around your goals. Many students also study abroad — without missing a beat in the lab or classroom.

Suggested course timelines

Click below to expand the degree path you are interested in (chemistry major or biochemistry concentration major), including whether you want to pair it with a pre-health track (e.g., pre-med/vet/dental).

All of these are suggestions. There are many different paths. Please speak with the chemistry chair or another chemistry faculty member about what best works for you. Included among the different paths is the possiblity of studying abroad. It is more than doable, but studying abroad does require planning for either major.

Study abroad for chemistry majors

Yes, chemistry majors do have the opportunity and ability to study abroad! We highly recommend that chemistry students choose to study abroad in the fall semester of their third year, because it will present the fewest conflicts. See below for suggested course sequencing for either degree path (chemistry major or biochemistry concentration major).

In addition to working closely with your academic advisor to choose a program and courses that will work for you, students studying abroad or in an off-campus domestic program consult with Skidmore’s Office of Off-Campus Study and Exchanges (OCSE).

The Chemistry Department currently approves the following programs:
  • IFSA Griffith University (Australia)
  • IFSA University of Melbourne (Australia)
  • Skidmore in London: Queen Mary, University of London
  • Skidmore in New Zealand
The following programs are also popular:
  • DIS - Study Abroad in Scandinavia
  • SIT Study Abroad/IHP Health and Community: Globalization, Culture, and Care

In addition to these programs, OCSE maintains a list of over 100 approved programs, which you can find on the OCSE search page

As part of the application process with OCSE you will have your chemistry courses reviewed by the chair of the Chemistry Department. You can also check the course-equivalency matrix to see which courses have previously been reviewed and approved for chemistry credit.

Plan your chemistry major and study abroad

If you plan to study abroad, it is important to plan ahead and think carefully about your courses each semester at Skidmore. You should work in consultation with your academic advisor to make sure you will have satisfied all requirements for your Skidmore chemistry degree of choice. For example, please click below to see some example course schedules you might follow.
