Federal Direct Student Loan Limits
Your maximum Federal Direct Student Loan eligibility is determined by your official class standing. The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) along with verification from tax returns and a verification worksheet determines the maximum amount a student can borrow in a "subsidized" Federal Direct Student Loan. If the subsidized eligibility is not the full amount you are eligible to receive based on your class standing, you are eligible for the additional funds in an unsubsidized loan. The Federal Government pays the interest on the "subsidized" loan while the borrower is in school. The interest rate of the "unsubsidized loan" at 6.8% is the responsibility of the borrower.
