The Empire's Backyard: Power & Pollution in Sheridan Hollow
ES 352, Sp '19: Environmental Studies Prof. AJ Schneller's students worked closely with community partners in the Environmental Justice neighborhood of Sheridan Hollow in Albany, NY documenting the history and current crisis of the power-plant that has powered the state Capitol since the early 1900's. Their work resulted in content for a collective multi-media exhibit,Climates of Inequality. Supported by the Skidmore PDF.
DS:251, Sp '20: In this course led by Emmy Award-winning filmmaker Catherine Tatge, students partnered with Saratoga community members to tell stories about Saratoga-based issues surrounding COVID-19 and the response from the Code Blue Shelter and Skidmore campus. Made possible by the generous support of Trustee Barbara Kahn Moller.
How to Tell A True Immigrant Story
Directed by Aggie Ebrahimi Bazaz ('16 Storytellers' Fellow), Co-Produced by Emily Rizzo ('16 Storytellers' Fellow), and made in partnership with Krystle Nowhitney Hernandez (Saratoga County EOC Deputy Director), this 360˚ VR doc film premiered in competition at Locarno Int'l Film Festival. The filmmakers hosted a community screening and dialogue at Cafe Lena and continues to share the voice of the identified "immigrant" community of Saratoga.
Compassionate Hands: Remembering The Skidmore College Dept of Nursing
HI 325, Sp '19: Students in History Prof. Tillman Nechtman's course worked to build an oral history archive of the Skidmore Nursing program - interviewing alumni, faculty, and researching the archive, and making the stories available on the Skidmore-Saratoga Memory Project site.
Closing a Prison: Deferring a Dream
HI 351, Fa '14 - Fa '17: For MDOCS' first participation in Project HAL, students focused on Mount McGregor prison, closed by state officials in 2014. From oral histories to materials for a group exhibition as part of the Humanities Action Lab project States of Incarceration, students worked with History Prof. Eric Morser to develop a compelling story.
60 Yrs Young: Story of the Saratoga Adult & Community Center
DS 381, Sp '15- Sp '17: Students in History Prof. Jordana Dym's class developed a short documentary film drawing from an archive of clippings, photographs, and ephemera as well as interviews of current seniors, to tell the story of the Saratoga Springs Adult and Community Center. The film and newly organized archive were shared at the Center's gala event in November 2015.
DS 381, Sp '15: Students in History Prof. Jordana Dym's class developed an exhibition at the Saratoga Springs History Museum telling the story of the community's growth from town to village to city, on the occasion of the centennial of the city charter (2015).
DS 202, Sp '17: Students in Biology Prof. Erika Schielke's course developed materials about the trees in Crandall Park, Glens Falls, for the park's Beautification Committee. The results of their research and foray into web storytelling are available on the Park's project website.

Prerequisites: As determined by the instructor and the Documentary Studies Advisory Board.
Prerequisites/ Corequisites DS 201/301 and DS 300 are not interchangeable. In DS 201/301, the DS workshops, students may be building skills with course materials or working on distinct projects, with work to be complete within that semester. In DS 300, the Memory Practicum, students will collaborate on a pre-designated project, which might be creating a film for a community partner, helping a local institution design a commemoration of a landmark event, or to create an exhibit in a nearby museum. The Practicum will allow faculty and students to collaborate on projects which might extend beyond the scope of a single semester.
