Dancing into a lasting friendship
When Audrey Kostick ’27 auditioned for Rithmos as a first-year student, she was looking for a way to keep dance in her life while pursuing her double major in health and human physiological sciences and anthropology. Instead, she found something more — a close friend in Hannah Schlosberg ’26 and a community that would become a defining part of their Skidmore experience.
Audrey joined Rithmos as a first-year student. Having danced throughout high school, she wanted a way to stay connected to dance while focusing on her academic interests. Rithmos seemed like a low-commitment outlet.
What she thought would be just a fun, casual dance activity soon became one of the most meaningful parts of her Skidmore experience — and the place where she found one of her closest friends.
Hannah Schlosberg ’26, a music and sociology double major, was already involved in the club. She had no prior dance experience when she auditioned the previous year but had always wanted to explore dance.
Before arriving at Skidmore, she searched online for clubs to join on campus and was drawn to Rithmos because it looked like a fun, welcoming community where she could try something new and meet new people.
Looking back on her three years with Rithmos, she’s grateful she stepped out of her comfort zone and auditioned. Not only did it help her discover her love for dance, but the supportive community she found within the club eased her transition into college.
Audrey and Hannah first met at Audrey’s audition.
The two have since become close friends. They spend time together in and outside of the dance studio and even choreographed the halftime routine at Skidmore’s Big Green Scream together.
If it hadn’t been for Rithmos, the two might not have met. Audrey spends much of her time in the Billie Tisch Center for Integrated Sciences working in labs, while Hannah can usually be found in Skidmore’s Zankel Music Center practicing music. Their academic interests don't usually overlap, but through weekly Rithmos rehearsals, they discovered how much they have in common. In addition to their majors, Audrey is also pursuing a minor in the Periclean Honors Forum, and Hannah is pursuing a minor in arts administration.
Audrey Kostick ’27 talks about her experience as president of Rithmos
Both students have taken on leadership roles within the club. Audrey now serves as Rithmos’s president, while Hannah is the group’s public relations manager.
Together, they’ve watched countless friendships form through the club.
“Rithmos is great because, like Hannah and me,” Audrey says, “everyone comes from different parts of the school — business, music, STEM, social sciences — but we’re all connected by the want to dance, and I think that’s pretty cool.”
For Audrey, that sense of connection is what makes the club special.
“Rithmos is really just a place for people to come and be themselves,” she says. “We see each other as people, students, and friends — and then we dance.”
Above all the sassy choreography and upbeat performances, both Audrey and Hannah agree that it’s the friendships that are the true beat of Rithmos.
