AM 376: E.L. Doctorow's America (3 cr)
Prof. Nathan | TuTh, 2:10-3:30 | TLC 307
An exercise in cultural criticism, this course examines and puts in context E.L. Doctorow’s historical fiction and the films based on his novels. “Doctorow’s subject,” writes one critic, “to speak broadly, has been the evolution of the American perspective. He’s interested in how our past is responsible for us as we are now.” This course takes up this theme by reading and studying Billy Bathgate, The Book of Daniel, The March, Ragtime, and World’s Fair, as well as critiques of these works.
