April 20, 2020
by Ali Stidd, Employer Recruitment and Events Coordinator

In the past decade, there has been a rise in remote job and internship opportunities.

The impacts of COVID-19 are leading candidates everywhere to consider remote positions.  At Skidmore, 200+ remote job and internship opportunities have already been posted on Handshake, Skidmore’s career center database.  Remote opportunities continue to be added on a regular basis.  A variety of Resources for Finding Remote Work has also been compiled to help students in their job and internship searches. Remote Work

There are a number of pros to working remotely. Here are few:

  • Flexibility – choose days, weeks and times where you are able to be most productive.
  • Cost savings
    • Commuting – no cost to travel to and from work
    • Clothing – Casual attire
    • Food – Eat at home, healthier and able to plan ahead.
    • Potentially less stress = more opportunity for Work/Life Balance
  • Opportunities to work local, nationwide and even globally from the comfort of home can expand possibilities for talented workers.
  • Ability to learn new technology skills or use remote-focused tools, which build important value-added soft skills to candidates’ professional abilities.

While there are benefits to remote positions, students should be prepared to ask questions before accepting a remote job or internship opportunity. Key questions to ask during an interview for remote work include:

  • What do you hope someone in this role will accomplish in the first few months?
  • How would you describe the culture?
  • With the team being entirely remote, what forms of communication are used? How does the team stay connected
  • Will you provide training and how will it be delivered?
  • What tools, equipment and resources will I need to be successful in this role?
  • What are major challenges someone in this position will face?
