Skidmore presents ‘Journalism During Turbulent Times’ with Gilad Halpern
Skidmore will host two public events this fall featuring journalist, broadcaster, and media historian Gilad Halpern, presented as part of the 2025 Jacob Perlow Series.
During his residency, Halpern will draw from his experiences as a contemporary Israeli
journalist to explore the media landscape in today’s Israel and the broader Middle
East. His visit was conceived by Murat Yildiz, associate professor of history at Skidmore,
and is connected to his fall seminar, Podcasting in the Middle East: A History (HI351P).
The residency includes two events, both free and open to the public:
At 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 21, Halpern will join Professor Yildiz for a conversation
titled "Podcasting the Middle East: Tel Aviv Review," held in the Wyckoff Center in
Case Center. The two will explore how English-language podcasts shape public understanding
of the Middle East and the advantages and limitations of podcasts as a medium for
sharing — and shaping — knowledge.
At 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 23, Halpern will deliver a lecture titled "The Role
of Journalism in Times of Crisis: Israel, the Middle East, and Beyond," in Davis Auditorium
in Palamountain Hall. Drawing on his work as an Israel-based international journalist
and media historian, Halpern will examine how journalism has been affected by political
unrest, financial pressures, and the spread of disinformation in the 21st century.
