NK Mabaso '19

Nkosingiphile (NK) Mabaso ’19 came from a small township near Johannesburg, South Africa, where she grew up in extreme poverty. Hope for a better future came to her and her family when she was selected to attend the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls, and then when she was accepted to Skidmore. While a major in Sociology with a minor in Computer Science, NK was a member of the International Students’ Union: UJIMA: Raíces, which promotes Latinx culture; and the African Heritage Awareness club (AHA). She was also a member of the Senior Gift Committee and worked in both the Office of Communications and Marketing and the Information Technology Help Desk.

All the odds were stacked against me and I was not supposed to ever become anything. But here I am...thriving and shining. My family would have not been able to give me this opportunity, which is not only changing my life but the lives of my family and community members. From the depths of my being, I thank you.”
