Law, The State and Revolutionary CHANGE

Thinking along with French Political Philosopher Louis Althusser (1918–1990), this workshop talk will take up the question of whether or not a state or governing regime can be transformed internally, by changing its laws, so that it can support totally different social and economic relations. Specifically, it will examine whether our existing, liberal democratic state might be altered by legislation so as to serve equally the interests and needs of all its subjects.

How, through deepening awareness of ourselves, can we become fully and authentically ourselves? The ox in the oxherding pictures and practices is the self, or more pointedly, self-awareness. My talk explores how the Yoga, Daoist, and Zen traditions come together in their attempts to answer this fundamental question.
