Skidmore Retirees

Dorothy Schwartz

Dorothy Schwartz, a longtime Skidmore physical education professor, died May 16, 1984, in Islip, N.Y. She was 84. The college learned of Dorothy’s death from her niece.

Dorothy joined the college’s PE department as an instructor in 1926. She was promoted to assistant professor in 1930, and to associate professor in 1940, a position she held until her retirement in 1959. According to her niece, she taught dance, folk dancing, and swimming for a number of years, and continued to teach swimming after an illness prevented her from teaching dance. She also supervised Skidmore’s dance club, which gave a concert every spring, often around May Day.

After leaving Skidmore, she moved to Islip, where she lived with her niece and her niece’s husband and did volunteer work for the hospital in Bay Shore.
