Irene Carn
Irene Carn, longtime professor of nursing, died April 24, 1994, in Sarasota, Fla.
A graduate of John Hopkins Hospital School of Nursing, Irene also held a B.A. and M.S. degree from Columbia University Teaching College and earned a master’s in public health from Columbia’s School of Public Health and Administrative Medicine.
She joined Skidmore’s nursing department in 1936 as an assistant professor of public-health nursing. She helped deliver the college’s acclaimed nursing curriculum for more than three decades, until her retirement in 1968. The program required students to complete two years of liberal arts and science studies at Skidmore and another two and a half years in clinical fieldwork at such places as the Yale School of Nursing, Butler Hospital in Providence, R.I., the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company’s Tuberculosis Sanatorium at Mount McGregor near Saratoga, and the East Harlem Nursing and Health Service in New York City.
When Irene was elected to serve on the Saratoga Hospital Board, she listed “good quality care for indigents” as one of her top priorities. She also served the League of Women Voters, Common Cause, and both national and Florida public health associations.
A Florida native, Irene returned there in retirement, keeping in contact with Skidmore community members both there and in Saratoga.
Her survivors are unknown.
