Skidmore Retirees

Mabel "Peggy" Biggie

Mabel “Peggy” Biggie, a longtime housekeeping and Dining Services employee, died peacefully on September 14, 2018. She was 92.

Peggy first joined the housekeeping staff in 1960 and worked at Skidmore Hall and Moore Hall on Skidmore’s old campus. She served as a full-time kitchen/dining room assistant from 1976 until her retirement in 1994.

Peggy was a dedicated Skidmore employee, had a great sense of humor and was known for the great care and kindness that she displayed toward others, both on and off campus, colleagues said.

“She was the ‘mother figure’ to everyone and watched out for us all,” said former colleague Marlene Williams, who now works in Skidmore’s post office. She added that Peggy often used to raise money for those in need, recalling that “She was always the first person to help.”

Peggy and her family have deep roots at Skidmore. Survivors include daughter Colleen Manning, supervisor of events and housekeeping at Skidmore; son-in-law Jack Manning, who retired from the College; daughter Kathleen Biggie (Robert) Peters ’74; daughter-in-law Marsha Biggie, a College retiree; niece Patricia Greenwood, student accounts representative at Skidmore; seven grandchildren, including Crystal Biggie Palmer ’99; and 13 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Alton Biggie, who worked in Campus Safety until his retirement from Skidmore in 1999, and her sons, Alton Jr. and Frederick.
