English Major’s Checklist

The Literary Studies Path

The 100-Level
  • Any expository writing class (EN 105 or EN 110)
  • One 100-level literature class
EN 205 - English Seminar
  • Introduction to the practice of literary studies as a scholary discipline. Emphasis falls on writing and researching about literature.
The 200-Level
  • Any TWO classes
  • Examples include Women & Literature, World Literature, Intro to Fiction or Poetry Writing, etc.
The 300-Level
  • Any FOUR classes, from medieval to contemporary literature, including creative writing workshops
  • A Senior Coda course in literary studies

 

The Creative writing Path

The 100-Level
  • Any expository writing class (EN 105 or EN 110)
  • One 100-level genre class (Fiction, Poetry, or Nonfiction)
EN 205 - English Seminar
  • Introduction to the practice of literary studies as a scholary discipline. Emphasis falls on writing and researching about literature.
The 200-Level
  • One literature class
  • One creative writing workshop course (e.g. Intro to Poetry, Fiction, or Nonfiction)
The 300-Level
  • One creative writing workshop (EN 378, 379, or 380)
  • Two literature courses and EN 377; OR three literature courses
  • An Advanced Project Coda

Total courses: 10 courses. Total credit hours: 32–34.

 NOTE: All students have to complete a course in the "Early", "Middle", and "Late" periods of literary history.
