Professor Effinger taught mathematics in the department from 1986 to 2015 and chaired the department from 2010 to 2014. His research interests include prime numbers and computational number theory.  He was co-author, with Dr. David Hayes of UMass Amherst, of the book Additive Number Theory of Polynomials over a Finite Field, published by Oxford University Press, and he wrote a prize-winning paper on using super-computers to study number theory. Since retirement he has co-authored, with Dr. Gary Mullen of Penn State, two textbooks on transitioning to higher mathematics and on number theory.
