Pam Tanowitz is the 2026 McCormack Visiting Artist-Scholar in Residence
Pam Tanowitz, a celebrated New York-based choreographer and founder of Pam Tanowitz Dance, will discuss her latest full-length dance work, “Pastoral,” at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 14, at The Frances Young Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery at Skidmore College.
The talk, Pam Tanowitz and the Pastoral: Artists in Conversation, will be presented as part of Tanowitz’s 2026 McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar Residency, during which she will engage with Skidmore students through participation in regularly scheduled dance classes, master classes, and informal meetings and dialogues.
At the Tang, Tanowitz will be joined by two of her “Pastoral” collaborators, artist Sarah Crowner and artistic director Gideon Lester, as well as Skidmore English Professor April Bernard and Assistant Professor of Dance Brian Lawson, who will moderate. The discussion will provide a glimpse into the creative process that shaped the dance work, which features a score by composer Caroline Shaw and used Beethoven’s Symphony No. 6 as a springboard for multidisciplinary creation. The event is free and open to the public.
The McCormack Endowed Visiting Artist-Scholar Residency at Skidmore provides an immersive experience for both the visiting artist and the Skidmore community, with opportunities for meaningful engagement with students and faculty through classes, workshops, discussions, and other campus activities.
The 2026 McCormack Visiting Artist-Scholar Residency is presented by Skidmore College’s Office of Special Programs, Dance Department, and the Tang Teaching Museum and Art Gallery.
