Mathematics and Economics

Achievement on the 2017-2018 academic year (including last summer)?
I was offered and have accepted an internship with the FDIC as part of their financial
management scholars program for the upcoming summer.
How did you choose your major?
I came to Skidmore knowing I liked mathematics so I decided to pursue it more and
realized I wanted to major in it. As for economics, I took an intro to macroeconomics
class my sophomore year and developed a great interest. I kept taking classes and
then also decided to major in it.
What do you plan to do after Skidmore?
Currently, the plan is to have a successful summer at the FDIC and hopefully get an
offer to go back. Then I will decide either to accept it or look for other areas of
interest. My background focuses on statistics and economics so I hope to get experiences
in those fields to then enter the workforce. I do plan to also pursue graduate studies,
but I want to gain experience first before I decide what it is that I want to study
in depth.
Recommendations for incoming OP students?
Stay hungry and stay interested. The semester can get tough and the gloomy cold weather
doesn’t always help. Therefore, take classes that you like and surround yourself with
people that uplift you.
Remember why you decided to come to college and keep that at the forefront. Don’t
detract yourself from the goal with negative externalities.
Office hours and academic resources are key. Professors are very helpful and welcoming
so use them when you are struggling. It benefits you academically and allows you to
establish key relationships, which helps when you need letters of recommendation or
networking opportunities.
Be open-minded and have fun. This campus is full of creative people, outspoken people,
but most importantly, welcoming people. So wander around and if you find things of
interest, pursue it.
