Artist Profile: Tom Myott

The signature artwork for this year’s Palamountain Scholarship Benefit is the handiwork of Tom Myott, a painter known for his landscapes, portraits and equine scenes. His action-packed painting of a Saratoga polo match—created specifically for Polo by Twilight—graces the cover of the event’s invitation and program book. The original painting will be offered as part of the evening’s fundraising auction.

"My subjects vary from action-filled thoroughbred racing scenes to icons like the carousel in Congress Park and Spit & Spat. I also create panoramic landscapes and large portraits," said Myott. “I work predominantly with acrylic paint in a contemporary style, characterized by unique brush strokes and intense color.”

"Myott is able to create large, powerful, muscular visions of horses," wrote Daniel Schechman ofSaratoga Today. "The sense of movement within the painting is unmistakable; the dots of color Myott paints outside his subjects give the illusion of great speed, as if horse and jockey are moving so fast they literally shed their own color."

Myott, who displays his work at a number of area businesses, has hosted many personal shows and created a mural for the Saratoga Springs Post Office. In 2003 he and a fellow artist opened a studio/gallery, named the Corner Gallery, at the former Troy Shirt Factory building in Glens Falls.

A native of South Glens Falls, Myott has been an art teacher in the South Glens Falls school district since 1992. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art at the State University of New York at Buffalo and a master’s degree in education from the State University of New York College at Plattsburg.

"I pursued a career in the teaching profession, which has enabled me to share my interest in art," said Myott. "The experience of demonstrating new media and techniques to students or helping a student’s artistic ability mature and excel is particularly gratifying."
