Skidmore Retirees

Margaret 'Peg' A. North Tacardon

Margaret “Peg” A. North Tacardon, associate professor of social work emerita, died Tuesday, January 21, 2020. She was 73.

Peg joined Skidmore as an assistant professor in 1978 and was promoted to associate professor in 1991.

During a nearly three-decade career at the College, Peg helped Skidmore’s social work program achieve national accreditation and taught in the University Without Walls Inmate Higher Education Program. Her courses at Skidmore included Human Behavior and Social Environment, Obsessions and Addictions, Social Work Values and Interpersonal Skills, and Prisons in America. She retired in 2007.

“Peg had a sharp intellect and a boundless, compassionate heart,” said Crystal Dea Moore, professor of social work. “She cared deeply for people who were vulnerable and oppressed, and her life’s work was a reflection of that.”

Born August 13, 1946 in Plattsburgh, Peg earned a bachelor’s degree at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh in 1968 and a master’s degree at the State University of New York at Albany in 1971. She also pursued doctoral-level studies at the University of South Carolina. Before joining Skidmore, she held several social service positions in Clinton County.

Survivors included her cousin, Sally Kemble, a nephew, Grover, her longtime friend and caregiver, Jeffrey Goodsell, and many loving friends whom she considered family. She was predeceased by her husband, Ralph Tacardon, who died in 1981, and her parents, Elizabeth C. (Gordon) and Thomas R. North.
