Scribner seminar faculty information

Scribner Seminar instructors guide students through their first academic experiences at Skidmore College and serve as faculty mentors during students’ first two years.

Faculty mentors first meet with their seminar students during New Student Orientation. Throughout the fall semester, they lead regular mentoring conversations, help students adjust to college-level learning, and meet with students during advising before registration for the following semester.

This sustained faculty connection is a defining part of Skidmore’s First-Year Experience. It gives students a trusted academic mentor as they explore their interests, make decisions, and find their place in the Skidmore community.

Supporting students through mentoring

Scribner Seminar faculty mentors are expected to devote regular time to mentoring and related activities. This includes:

• Meeting with students during orientation.
• Holding mentoring conversations throughout the fall semester.
• Advising students before course registration.
• Helping students identify academic resources and support.
• Encouraging students to reflect on their goals, interests, and progress.
• Collaborating with Peer Mentors and First-Year Experience staff.
