At Skidmore College, where you live is part of what you learn. About 90% of students live on campus, so residential life shapes much of the everyday college experience. Our motto, Creative Thought Matters shows up here, too — in the perspective you hadn’t considered, the problem you work through, and the choices you make about what kind of neighbor you want to be.
Residential Life provides the setting, support, and structure. Students shape what happens next. Some learning happens through programs and conversations led by Resident Assistants; much of it happens between the scheduled things — figuring out a roommate routine, asking for help, caring for shared spaces, or working together to co-create a community experience.
Resident Assistants are returning students who live in the residence halls and serve as a first point of connection. They get to know their residents, bring people together, help students navigate roommate or community concerns, and connect them with the right campus resources when they need more support. They also help respond to safety concerns and other issues that come up after hours.
The residential experience changes as students do. Residence halls offer shared spaces,
floor communities, and a built-in network of peers and Resident Assistants. Juniors
and seniors who choose on-campus apartments gain more privacy and take on more responsibility
for managing daily life.
By senior year, the goal isn’t to need less support. It’s to know what you can handle
on your own, when to reach out, and how to build the network you need.
Students who want a more intentional residential experience can choose a Special Interest Community centered on shared interests, identities, or ways of living.
Gardenside takes that connection further by pairing a sustainability-focused residential community with a one-credit course and work in places such as Skidmore’s North Woods, Community Garden, and compost site.
