The Stewart Site Collection
William Butz donated his collection of artifacts from the Stewart site to Skidmore
College in 1991. The majority of the artifacts shown on the linked page were surface
collected by him, although several of them were recovered as part of a controlled
surface collection conducted by Skidmore College in 1992. The diagnostic points date
from approximately 3,000 BC to AD 1,000.
Site Features
Several features were identified at the Stewart site. Two hearths were defined, one in Units 17 & 27, Block D (Feature 2), and one in Unit 3, Block B (Feature 5). Feature 2 matrix was a dark brown (10YR 3/3) with olive (5Y 4/3) clay silt with charcoal. The hearth was 210 cm (83 in) long, 90 cm (35 in) wide, and 24 cm (9 in) deep. The second hearth, Feature 5 identified in Block B, was a yellowish-red (5YR 4/6) with yellowish-brown (10YR 5/6) clay silt with charcoal. The hearth was 200 cm (79 in) long, 150 cm (59 in) wide, and 39 cm (15 in) deep. In profile, three distinct shallow basins were noted. Charcoal samples from this feature yielded two, overlapping radiocarbon dates. It was identified approximately 12 m (39 ft) south of six post molds identified in Unit 2. In addition, the excavation block in which the feature was identified included two Snook Kill point bases and a scraper made from a Snook Kill point. High densities of calcined bone and numerous charred seeds (tentatively identified as Chenopodium) were recovered from the plow zone above the feature.
Feature 7 was located in Unit 33. The matrix was a brownish-yellow (10YR 6/8) with olive (5Y5/4) clay and silt with charcoal. The feature was 11 cm (4 in) long, 6 cm (2.5 in) wide, and 5 cm (2 in) deep. This feature is tentatively typed as a hearth.
A possible storage pit (Feature 6) was identified in Unit 31. It measured 25 x 30 x 27 cm (10 x 12 x 11 in). Feature matrix was a dark grayish brown (2.5Y4/2), gray (2.5Y6/0), and yellowish brown (10YR5/8) clay silt.
In addition to the above features, six post molds were identified in Unit 2, Block C. A possible post mold was also identified in Unit 25. The matrix was olive brown (2.5Y4/4) clay silt. The post measured 13 x 13 x 13 cm.
