Location: Emerson Auditorium, Palamountain Hall
Lecturer: Steven M. Wasserstrom, Moe and Izetta Tonkon Professor of Judaic Studies and Humanities at Reed College, will speak on "The Hedgehog's Dilemma: On the necessity and the impossibility of understanding religion."

Professor Wasserstrom is author of Religion after Religion: Gershom Scholem, Mircea Eliade, and Henry Corbin at Eranos, a study of three scholars whose work transformed scholarship in religion, and which has itself become a staple in any course on theory and method in the study of religion. Wasserstrom's archival work and study of the history of these historians of religion, in which, among other things, he exposed their fascist and nationalistic political affiliations, is well regarded in the field of religious studies and indeed important to an understanding of the history of religion per se: indeed, his work is useful in thinking about theory and method in most academic disciplines. Professor Wasserstrom also authored Between Muslim and Jew: the Problem of Symbiosis under Early Islam, which received the Award for Excellence in Historical Studies from the American Academy of Religion, and his work has been published widely in academic journals.
