Winter teams return to action

Men's basketball improved to 6-2 with a pair of wins at the D3hoops.com Classic in Las Vegas. Senior John Mantas (Niskayuna, N.Y.) scored 22 points off the bench in the opening win over U.S. Merchant Marine Academy, while classmate Melvis Langyintuo (Tamale, Ghana) added 14 points, five rebounds, and three blocks. Against Ursinus, senior Terron Victoria (Albany, N.Y.) scored a game-high 22 points and Mantas chipped in 16, while senior Gerard O'Shea finished with seven assists. Mantas was named to the All-Tournament Team after averaging 19 points per game in the two victories. Skidmore opens league play Friday, Jan. 6, hosting Vassar for an 8 p.m. tip-off.

Women's basketball went 1-1 this week at the Springfield Naismith Classic. The Thoroughbreds opened with a 57-47 win over Western Connecticut behind 10 points apiece from senior Christina Gargiso (Staten Island, N.Y.) and Jordyn Wartts (St. Louis, Mo.). They suffered a 58-52 loss in the championship game to host Springfield. Senior Megan Gaugler (Amsterdam, N.Y.) had a team-high 13 points, while freshman Angela Botiba (Douala, Cameroon) had six points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Gaugler and Botiba were named to the All-Tournament Team. Skidmore is 6-2 overall and will host defending Liberty League champion Vassar at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 6.

Ice hockey went 0-1-1 at the Middlebury College Holiday Classic. The team suffered a 5-0 loss to No. 15 Middlebury in the opener but came back to earn a 4-4 tie against Potsdam. Freshman Tim Colvin (Brunswick, Ohio), sophomore Tony Giacin (St. Louis, Mo.), senior Jack Walsh (North Reading, Mass.) and freshman David Limoges (Saint-Hippolyte, Quebec) all scored, with Limoges tying it up late with his sixth goal of the season. The Thoroughbreds are 4-7-1 and travel to Potsdam for a 7 p.m. start this Friday, Jan. 6. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
