Baseball rallies to win Liberty League title

After losing its opening game, baseball won four straight elimination games to capture the 2012 Liberty League Championship. Junior Leejay Pollacchi (Porter Corners, N.Y.) was named tournament MVP, while classmates Max Martins (Newton, Mass.), (Cadyville, N.Y.), Geoff Green (Underhill, Vt.) and senior Zack Rudman (Pittsford, N.Y.) were named to the All-Tournament Team. Martins earned the victory in the 3-1 championship win over St. Lawrence, while Keysor earned the save to finish the season 6-0 against the regular-season champs. Skidmore is 30-15 overall and takes on Farmingdale State in the opening round of the NCAA New York regional at 1:15 p.m. Wednesday.

Women's tennis reached the NCAA regional final after a 5-0 shut out over Simmons and a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over TCNJ. After falling behind 4-3 to TCNJ, sophomore Melissa Hirsch (Alamo, Calif.) and freshman Alex Smith (Beverly Hills, Calif.) rallied for victories at first and fifth singles respectively to earn the 5-4 win. The Thoroughbreds' season came to an end with a 5-0 loss to No. 3 Amherst. No. 17 Skidmore ends with a 15-6 record.

Men's tennis ended the season with a 5-1 loss to Trinity (TX) in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The second doubles team of sophomores Oliver Loutsenko (Bellmore, N.Y.) and Danny Knight (Ponte Vedra, Fla.) earned the only point for Skidmore with their 8-3 win.

Golf makes its 26 th straight NCAA tournament appearance this week in Howley-in-the-Hills, Fla. The Thoroughbreds opened play Tuesday, May 15. They have won seven tournaments this season. ~ By Cody Berschwinger
