2013 Juried Student Art Exhibition at the Schick Art Gallery

February 13, 2013

Skidmore’s annual Juried Student Art Exhibition opened Feb. 7 with a well-attended reception that included the awarding of prizes designated by juror Kathryn Price.

Price, curator of special projects at the Williams College Art Museum, said, “I was blown away by the quality of the work and ambition of the students at Skidmore! The 200 submissions by 82 artists demonstrate the overwhelming significance of the show to both the faculty and the students.”

She continued, “Most striking was the sheer number of paintings submitted, followed closely by the scale of the works. Quantity can often be synonymous with a lack of quality – but not here, not this day. Talented painters were out in full force this year, displaying gestural brushstrokes and unexpected compositions. Much of the work was figural, particularly in painting and drawing. Of the 71 pieces chosen, over 40 percent are focused on the face and body. The scale of works in painting, drawing, and ceramics shows a level of ambition on par with artists confident in their technique.

“Each work in this gallery is a culmination of thoughtful decisions in color, subject, composition, technique, and presentation. The work has to be different and inventive and risky in some way. These elements combine to create artistic serendipity,” she added.

Price announced the following prizes:

Schick Art Gallery Award: Joe Klockowski ’14, Untitled; Tang Teaching Museum Award: Flavia D’Urso ’13, Taylor; Renee Vandewater Award for Painting: Melissa Leung ’13, Underneath the Mask; Renee Vandewater Award for any Media:  Alison Eagle ’14, Catherine.

Soave Faire Award: Hannah Ryan-Humphrey ’13, Sleeper II; Pro Arts Award: Alyssa Pomfrey ’13, Woman’s Best Friend; Allerdice Award: Nick Santa Donato ’13, Still Figure 4; Adirondack Trust Award: Caroline Bailey ’14, Metamorphosis; Skidmore Shop Award: Lydia Mozzone ’14, Catherine

Honorable mentions:  Julia DeGemmis ’13, Return; Lucas Abend ’13, Inside of a Black Hole #2; Lindsay Camp ’14, Red Room.

Price will give a talk at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 27, in Davis Auditorium. She will discuss her experience as juror of the 2013 annual Student Art Exhibition and her work as a curator at Williams College, including an interdisciplinary exhibition there, Landscapes of the Mind: Contemporary Artists Contemplate the Brain, which she co-curated in 2010. She considers it a strong example of the Williams museum’s commitment to multidisciplinary approaches to looking and thinking about art.

The exhibition closes March 21.
