Winter athletes receive league recognition

Women's basketball returned to the Liberty League playoffs for the first time since 2009-2010 on Feb. 20 and lost to St. Lawrence 58-44. The Thoroughbreds finished the season with an overall mark of 12-14. Dani DeGregory '16 (Greenwich, N.Y.) led Skidmore with 17 points, including five three-pointers. Angela Botiba '15 (Douala, Cameroon) chipped in seven points and six rebounds, while Molly McLaughlin '15 (Westwood, Mass.) and Amber Holgate '16 (Easton, Mass.) each had six points.

Four members of the team were also tabbed for post-season honors, as announced Feb. 21 by the Liberty League.

Jordyn Wartts '15 (St. Louis, Mo.) was named Defensive Player of the Year to go along with an honorable mention selection. Botiba earned a first-team selection while DeGregory and Skylar Caligaris '16 (Cambridge, Mass.) were named to the all-rookie team.

Men's basketball came up short in its attempt for a third consecutive Liberty League title, losing Feb. 20 to Hobart, 77-72. Tanner Brooks '16 (Pikesville, Md.) had a team-high 22 points on 8-for-15 shooting from the floor. Aldin Medunjanin '16 (New York, N.Y.) added 21 points and eight assists, while Sakhile Sithole '13 (Pietermaritzburg, South Africa) and Connor Merrill '15 (Panton, Vt.) each had 12 points. The Thoroughbreds closed out their season with a record of 15-11, including nine conference victories.

Three members of the squad also took home all-league honors, as announced by the Liberty League this past week.

Medunjanin was named Rookie of the Year and was also selected to the first-team. Merrill was selected to the second-team, while Brooks received an honorable mention. Both Brooks and Medunjanin were also selected to the League's all-rookie squad as well.

Men's ice hockey lost to Babson College, 7-1 Saturday, Feb. 23, in an ECAC East quarterfinal match. The Thoroughbreds end their season with a record of 11-13-2 overall. Vlad Gavrick '15 (Kharkiv, Ukraine) scored Skidmore's loan goal, giving him 11 goals on the season. Ben Freiberg '16 (Weston, Mass.) made 24 stops in net for the Thoroughbreds.

Prior to Skidmore's playoff contest, the ECAC East announced that three Thoroughbreds had been selected all-conference.

Defenseman Zach Menard '13 (Burlington, Mass.) was named first-team all-conference, while Gavrick earned a second-team nod. Jack Even '16 (Wethersfield, Conn.) was named to the all-rookie team.

Skidmore’s men's and women's swimming and diving teams posted their highest team finishes in recent years at the UNYSCSA meet Feb. 20-23 at Ithaca College.
 
The women finished seventh with 518 points, while the men took ninth with 321 points.

Carrie Koch '13 (Wellesley, Mass.) broke her own record in the 1650 Free with a time of 18:04.69. Koch also lowered her own record in the 1000 Free with a 10:53.84 split. Catherine King '15 (Wellesley, Mass.) established a new program record in the 100 Free when she finished with a time of 52:99. She also lowered her own record posting a blazing 24.03 in the 50 Free. Yookee Roh '16 (Tenafly, N.J.) also set a new program record in the 200 Back, as she finished with a time of 2:12.71. For the men, Jesse Adler '13 (Chappaqua, N.Y.) finished 13th, lowering his own record in the 200 Back, posting a time of 1:56.61. Jacob Nathan '15 (Toledo, Ohio) finished 10th in the 3 Meter Dive with a score of 374.55, while teammate Kai Inaba '16 (Kamuela, Hawaii) took 18th place with 262.00 points.

The Thoroughbreds return to the pool March 20-23 for the Division III National Championships at Conroe ISD Natatorium.

Men's lacrosse posted a 14-9 loss to Babson College Saturday, Feb. 23, at Wachenheim Field. Pre-season All-American Mike Perlow '16 (Briarcliff, N.Y.) paced the Thoroughbreds with three goals, giving him his first hat trick of the season. J.P. Sullivan '13 (Floral Park, N.Y.) had a game-high four total points (3 goals, 1 assist), while Bryan Connolly '13 (Babylon, N.Y.) added a goal and an assist.

Skidmore is back in action at 2 p.m. Sunday, March 3, when it faces Bates College at Harvard University. ~ By Sean Farnsworth
