Cristal Maria '20

My name is Cristal Maria and I am from Brooklyn, NYC, but was raised in the Dominican Republic. I am a junior at Skidmore, majoring in Political Science and minoring in Sociology and Intergroup Relations. I am passionate about social justice work that is centered on equity and reparations. More specifically, how we can socially, politically, economically, and emotionally compensate people that live on the intersections of oppressed identities.
 
In my past 2.5 years at Skidmore, I have served as Secretary and Vice President for Raíces, have been the RA for the Multicultural Floor for the past two years, am a Junior Class Senator, work for the Office of Leadership Activities as the Student Events Manager at Case Desk, and co-founded, hosted and now manage Pass the Mic, a social justice-focused student club.
 
Pass the Mic is a student-run radio show, community, and artistic platform for people of color, people with disabilities, international, immigrant, refugee, LGBTQ+, and economically disadvantaged communities on Skidmore's campus. At Pass the Mic, we aim to uplift the art, voices, and unfiltered experiences of individuals in those target communities, while prioritizing social and racial equity as well as power and positionality.
