Sanjna Selva '22
My name is Sanjna Selva. I was born and raised in Malaysia, but attended high school
in Singapore – the perk of living at the intersection of two closely-neighboring countries.
I am a sophomore majoring in International Affairs and minoring in Media and Film
Studies, and the Honors Forum. I am passionate about documentary film-making, photography
and social justice, and I'm currently in the process of filming my first independent
documentary. My documentary is set in Nepal and, based on personal experiences that
I encountered during my gap year, investigates an industry of child trafficking in
orphanages across the country. Last December, I received the 2018 Tom and Jill Lewis
Endowment Fund for Media and Film Studies, and continue to receive support from Skidmore's
MDOCS program, in helping me make this project a reality.
Since the first semester of my first year, I have been a part of Pass the Mic--the
radio show, SoundCloud podcast and social justice-oriented club at Skidmore. Pass
the Mic is a platform that aims to uplift the art, voices and unfiltered experiences
of individuals from marginalized communities, on and off Skidmore's campus. I recently
became co-manager of Pass the Mic, a role that involves managing the live broadcast,
recording photography & social media presence of the club, in addition to planning
community events. Pass the Mic (@passthemicskid on Instagram and SoundCloud) airs
every Friday from 5-6 p.m. on WSPN 91.1FM.
